Sp2 Carbon Conversion

Sp2 carbon conversion is the chemical transformation of carbon atoms with sp2 hybridization, typically found in alkenes, aromatic rings, and graphitic materials, into new bonding environments or functionalized structures. The process changes the carbon framework by disrupting or modifying π bonds through reactions such as hydrogenation, addition, oxidation, or C–C bond-forming functionalization, often altering molecular geometry, reactivity, and electronic properties. In chemistry, sp2 carbon conversion supports the synthesis of saturated and selectively functionalized molecules, enables the modification of carbon-based materials, and provides a route for tuning properties relevant to catalysis, organic synthesis, and advanced materials research.

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

Conversion of Units

2023

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...
