Cardiac Tamponade

Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening condition in which fluid, blood, or other material accumulates in the pericardial sac and compresses the heart, limiting its ability to pump effectively. As intrapericardial pressure rises, the cardiac chambers, particularly during diastolic filling, cannot expand normally, reducing venous return, stroke volume, and cardiac output; severe cases cause obstructive shock. Clinicians assess suspected tamponade using symptoms, physical findings, hemodynamic changes, and echocardiography, which can show pericardial effusion and impaired chamber filling. Rapid recognition guides urgent treatment, including drainage of the pericardial space and management of the underlying cause.

Visualization of Streptococcus pneumoniae within Cardiac Microlesions and Subsequent Cardiac Remodeling

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.

Cardiac Stress Test Induced by Dobutamine and Monitored by Cardiac Catheterization in Mice

This protocol describes 3D bioprinting of cardiac tissue without the use of biomaterials. 3D bioprinted cardiac patches exhibit mechanical integration of component spheroids and are highly promising in cardiac tissue regeneration and as 3D models of heart disease.

Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...

2023

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center The cardiac assessment is one of the core examinations performed by almost every physician whenever encountering a patient. Disorders of the cardiac system are among the most common reasons for hospital admission, with conditions ranging from myocardial infarction to congestive heart failure. Learning a complete and thorough cardiac examination is therefore crucial for any practicing physician.
