Cervical Spine

The cervical spine is the uppermost region of the vertebral column, supporting the head while protecting the spinal cord and enabling neck movement. It consists of seven vertebrae, intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, muscles, and associated nerves; together, these structures provide stability and controlled flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral bending. In clinical practice, assessing the cervical spine helps identify trauma, degenerative changes, nerve-root compression, spinal cord dysfunction, and conditions such as cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy. Imaging, neurological examination, and functional evaluation guide diagnosis and treatment, while understanding cervical anatomy supports safer procedures, rehabilitation, and injury prevention.

2013

A novel technique to create a reproducible in vivo model of cervical spinal cord laceration injury in the mouse is described. This technique is based on spine stabilization by fixation of the cervical facets and laceration of the spinal cord using an oscillating blade with an accuracy of ±0.01 mm.

The goal of this protocol is to obtain high-quality diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) of the rat spinal cord for noninvasive characterization of tissue microstructure. This protocol describes optimizations of the MRI sequence, radiofrequency coil, and analysis methods to enable DWI images free from artifacts.

Quantification of Dendritic Spines Using Confocal Microscopy Imaging

Source: Gouder, et. al. Three-dimensional Quantification of Dendritic Spines from Pyramidal Neurons Derived from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the imaging and analysis of dendritic spines in transduced, immunolabeled pyramidal neurons using confocal microscopy. Background noise is reduced, and dendrites are traced by estimating their diameter and length. Automated spine segmentation involves setting parameters for dendrite and spine dimensions...
