Data-driven Decision Support

Data-driven decision support uses systematically collected and analyzed information to guide choices, prioritize actions, and improve outcomes rather than relying solely on intuition. In clinical settings, it combines patient records, laboratory results, imaging, monitoring data, and research evidence with statistical models or rule-based algorithms to identify patterns, estimate risks, and generate recommendations. Clinicians can use these tools to support diagnosis, select treatments, monitor disease progression, and allocate resources while retaining responsibility for interpretation and care decisions. Effective systems depend on accurate, timely data, transparent reasoning, and integration into clinical workflows, making them valuable for evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and more personalized healthcare.

Using CVP to Support Expansion Decisions

2026

Expanding production capacity is a strategic decision that enables a business to meet increasing customer demand and support future growth. However, expansion typically requires significant investment in facilities, machinery, and personnel, resulting in higher fixed costs. Before committing to such investments, managers use Cost-Volume-Profit (CVP) analysis to evaluate whether the expected increase in sales will be sufficient to recover the additional costs and generate an acceptable level of...

Thinking Too Much Impairs Decision-Making

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University When we are considering a tough choice between two or more attractive options, we often end up actively weighing the pros and cons of each alternative. By reflecting on their advantages and disadvantages, we attempt to fit a complex, subjective decision into an orderly set of criteria. However, research in psychology suggests that this sort of introspective approach might not always yield the most optimal outcomes.1 In other...

A Data-Driven Approach to Quantifying Immune States in Sepsis

2025

This study investigates the immune condition in sepsis by analyzing the quantitative relationships among white blood cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils in sepsis patients and healthy controls using data visualization analysis and three-dimensional numerical fitting to establish a mathematical model.

CorrelationCalculator and Filigree: Tools for Data-Driven Network Analysis of Metabolomics Data

We present CorrelationCalculator and Filigree, two tools for data-driven network construction and analysis of metabolomics data. CorrelationCalculator supports building a single interaction network of metabolites based on expression data, while Filigree allows building a differential network, followed by network clustering and enrichment analysis.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Decision-making is an important component of human executive function, in which a choice about a course of action or cognition is made from many possibilities. Damage to the inferior parts of the frontal lobes can affect a person's ability to make good decisions. However, while decision-making deficits can have a large impact on one's life, these deficits can be difficult to quantify in the laboratory.
