Fecal Elimination

Fecal elimination is the physiological process by which the gastrointestinal tract moves and expels fecal material, making it essential for maintaining bowel function and assessing clinical health. As digestion progresses, the colon absorbs water and electrolytes while coordinated peristaltic contractions propel stool into the rectum; defecation occurs when rectal distension triggers neural signals and relaxation of the anal sphincters. In clinical practice, evaluating frequency, consistency, color, discomfort, and continence helps identify altered bowel function, including constipation or diarrhea. These observations guide hydration, dietary, medication, mobility, and toileting interventions and can support early recognition of gastrointestinal or systemic disease.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner The quality of water destined for use in agricultural, recreational, and domestic settings is of great importance due to the potential for outbreaks of waterborne disease. Microbial agents implicated in such events include parasites, bacteria, and viruses that are shed in high numbers in the feces of infected people and animals. Transmission to new and susceptible hosts may...

Fecal Glucocorticoid Analysis: Non-invasive Adrenal Monitoring in Equids

Cited by 6 •

2016

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

Detection of Human Fecal Metabolites Using a Bacterial Biosensor

2026

Begin with a bacterial biosensor culture suspended in a medium. These engineered bacteria produce a transcription factor that, upon binding to a specific fecal metabolite, activates a promoter associated with a fluorescent reporter gene.To this culture, add a filtered human fecal sample containing metabolites, such as lactate, that are involved in host-microbiome interactions.Dilute this mixture with a fresh medium to maintain an optimal reaction volume.Incubate without shaking to mimic the...

Evaluating the Effects of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in an Interleukin-10 Deficient Mouse

This video demonstrates a procedure of fecal microbiota transplantation in an interleukin-10 deficient mouse with colon inflammation. Colonized fecal microbes in the gut release secondary metabolites, eliciting anti-inflammatory cytokine release and reducing colon inflammation.
