Perfusion Rate

Perfusion rate is the volume of blood delivered to a tissue per unit of time, often normalized to tissue mass, and is essential for supplying oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste. It depends on the pressure gradient driving circulation and vascular resistance, which changes with vessel diameter, cardiac output, blood viscosity, and local regulation. In clinical practice, clinicians assess perfusion rate to evaluate organ function, recognize impaired circulation, and guide treatment in conditions such as shock or vascular disease. Measurement through bedside monitoring, Doppler methods, or perfusion imaging can support diagnosis, treatment decisions, and evaluation of recovery.

Factors Affecting Drug Distribution: Organ Perfusion Rate

2025

Drug distribution within the body is a complex process influenced by several factors, including perfusion rate, the rate at which the bloodstream transports drugs to tissue. This limitation becomes particularly significant when dealing with highly lipophilic drugs. In such cases, the rate at which the drug can move across membranes is crucial, and if the membrane is highly permeable to the drug, distribution becomes rate-limited by perfusion. Perfusion rate-limited distribution relies on the...

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.

Langendorff Retrograde Heart Perfusion: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

In this video, we perform Langendorff retrograde perfusion of an isolated mouse heart. During the procedure, the cardiac activity of the heart is maintained by perfusing it retrogradely with a perfusion solution via the coronary arteries using a cannula inserted into the ascending aorta. The model is used to study the cardiac pathophysiology of the heart.
