Ppe Donning

PPE donning is the deliberate process of putting on personal protective equipment in a specified sequence to reduce exposure to infectious agents, hazardous substances, or other clinical risks. It typically begins with hand hygiene and proceeds through items such as a gown or coverall, mask or respirator, eye protection, and gloves, while ensuring proper fit, coverage, and secure placement; respirator use may also require a seal check. In clinical settings, correct donning supports standard and transmission-based precautions during patient care, specimen handling, and procedures that may generate splashes or aerosols. Training and consistent sequencing help minimize contamination and strengthen healthcare worker and patient safety.

The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.
