Tympanic Membrane Thermometer

Tympanic membrane thermometers are clinical devices that estimate core body temperature by sensing infrared radiation emitted by the tympanic membrane and surrounding ear canal. A probe positioned in the external auditory canal detects this radiation and converts it into a temperature reading, so accurate placement, a clear line of sight, and appropriate technique are essential. Clinicians use these thermometers for rapid, minimally invasive assessment of fever and temperature changes in emergency, outpatient, and inpatient settings. Their speed and ease of use support repeated measurements, although ear anatomy, positioning, and obstructing material can affect reliability and should be considered when interpreting results.

Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide: Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms. Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement. Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination. Step 4: Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort and check for cerumen...

Thermometers and Temperature Scales

Any physical property that depends consistently and reproducibly on temperature can be used as the basis of a thermometer. For example, volume increases with temperature for most substances. This property is the basis for the common alcohol thermometer and the original mercury thermometers. Other properties used to measure temperature include electrical resistance, color, and the emission of infrared radiation. As many physical properties depend on temperature, the variety of thermometers is...

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

We present a technique for localized administration of drugs through the trans-tympanic route into the cochlea. Drug delivery through this route would not interfere with the anti-cancer efficacy of the chemotherapeutic drugs such as cisplatin.
