Subcutaneous Needle

A subcutaneous needle is a short, fine, sterile device used to deliver medication into the tissue layer beneath the skin, where it can be absorbed gradually into the circulation. During injection, the needle passes through the epidermis and dermis into subcutaneous fat, while its gauge, length, insertion angle, and injection volume help determine accurate placement and patient comfort. Clinicians use subcutaneous needles for therapies such as insulin, anticoagulants, vaccines, and other medications suitable for this route. Proper selection and technique support reliable dosing, reduce tissue injury, and enable patients to administer some treatments safely outside clinical settings.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...

We standardized an abdominal adipose tissue biopsy using a non-diathermy method performed under local anesthesia. Three cases of excessive post-operation bleeding out of 115 operations (2.61%) occurred. We conclude that an abdominal adipose tissue surgical biopsy using a non-diathermy method can be safely applied to healthy men.

2013

Human tumor xenografts in immunodeficient mice are valuable tools to study cancer biology. Specific protocols to generate subcutaneous and intrahepatic xenografts from human hepatocellular carcinoma cells or tumor fragments are described. Liver regeneration induced by partial hepatectomy in recipient mice is presented as a strategy to facilitate intrahepatic engraftment.
