Uterine Palpation

Uterine palpation is a clinical examination technique used to assess the uterus through the abdominal wall and, when appropriate, during a bimanual pelvic examination. By applying controlled pressure with the hands, clinicians evaluate uterine size, position, shape, consistency, mobility, and tenderness, while comparing findings with expected anatomical or pregnancy-related changes. This method supports assessment of gestational development and helps identify abnormalities such as enlargement, masses, inflammation, or pain. Although palpation is rapid and noninvasive, clinicians interpret its findings alongside the patient’s history, other examination results, and imaging when needed to guide diagnosis and management.
