Arm Support

Arm support is a mechanical structure or device designed to bear, stabilize, or guide the weight and movement of the human arm. In engineering, it works by transferring loads through a frame, joint, brace, or adjustable surface while controlling motion and distributing pressure across the body. Designs may use passive supports, counterbalances, compliant materials, or powered actuators to reduce muscle effort and improve positioning. Arm supports are applied in ergonomic workstations, rehabilitation equipment, assistive devices, prosthetics, and human-robot interaction, where they can reduce fatigue, improve movement precision, and support safer, more accessible task performance.

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Muscles that Move the Arm

2024

Nine muscles are involved in arm movements. Two of these, the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi, originate from the axial skeleton and are called axial muscles. The other seven originate from the scapula and are called the scapular muscles. The pectoralis major has two origins. Its clavicular head originates on the medial half of the clavicle. In contrast, the sternocostal head originates on the costal cartilages of ribs 1-6, the sternum, and the aponeurosis of the external oblique of the...

Self-Help Support Groups

Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems. Accessibility and Cost-Effectiveness One of the primary strengths of self-help...

Sample preparation for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a significant bottleneck in the structure determination workflow of this method. Here, we provide detailed methods for using an easy-to-use, three-dimensionally printed block for the preparation of support films to stabilize samples for transmission EM studies.
