Automatic Brightness

Automatic brightness is a control system that adjusts a display’s luminance in response to changing viewing conditions, improving visibility while reducing unnecessary power use. An ambient-light sensor measures surrounding illumination, and a control algorithm compares that measurement with a target brightness before signaling the display driver to increase or decrease light output. In engineering, this closed-loop process is used in smartphones, laptops, vehicles, medical monitors, and other electronic interfaces. Effective designs must balance responsiveness, visual comfort, energy efficiency, sensor accuracy, and stability, making automatic brightness a practical example of feedback control in human-centered device engineering.

2025

Automatic processing refers to the cognitive operations that occur without conscious intent or awareness, playing a fundamental role in shaping social cognition and behavior. These processes enable individuals to navigate complex social environments efficiently by relying on mental shortcuts and pre-existing knowledge structures known as schemas. One of the most influential mechanisms underlying automatic processing is priming, which subtly activates mental representations through exposure to...
