Resonant Frequency Shift

Resonant frequency shift is the change in the natural frequency at which a system vibrates most strongly, providing information about changes in its physical properties or environment. In an engineering structure or device, the shift occurs when parameters such as stiffness, mass, damping, temperature, or applied stress alter the balance governing vibration; for an ideal mass-spring system, increasing mass lowers the resonant frequency, while increasing stiffness raises it. Engineers use these changes in sensors, resonators, and structural health monitoring to detect added mass, material degradation, cracks, pressure, and chemical binding. Measuring resonant frequency shifts supports condition assessment, precision instrumentation, and the design of responsive micro- and nanoscale devices.

Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Henrik Sundén – Chalmers University of Technology Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a vital analysis technique for organic chemists. With the help of NMR, the work in the organic lab has been facilitated tremendously. Not only can it provide information about the structure of a molecule but also determine the content and purity of a sample. Compared with other commonly encountered techniques for organic chemists — such as thermal analysis and mass...

This paper presents the use of PSYCHE and SAPPHIRE-PSYCHE in the metabolic profiling of plants and includes detailed procedures for sample preparation and optimal Pure Shift NMR spectra recording. Examples through which the gain in resolution achieved by homonuclear decoupling allows a more comprehensive understanding of the system are discussed.

The Lewis structure of a nitrite anion (NO2−) may actually be drawn in two different ways, distinguished by the locations of the N-O and N=O bonds. If nitrite ions do indeed contain a single and a double bond, the two bond lengths are expected to be different. A double bond between two atoms is shorter (and stronger) than a single bond between the same two atoms. However, experiments show that both N–O bonds in NO2− have the same strength and length, and are identical in all other...
