Water Reducers

Water reducers are chemical admixtures used in concrete to lower the amount of mixing water needed for a specified workability, improving strength, durability, or economy. They typically adsorb onto cement particles and disperse them through electrostatic repulsion or steric effects, reducing particle flocculation and releasing trapped water within the cement paste. In engineering, water reducers help produce workable concrete with a lower water-to-cement ratio, which can increase compressive strength and reduce permeability after curing. They support applications ranging from conventional construction to high-performance concrete, where controlled flow, durability, and material efficiency are essential.

Adaptations that Reduce Water Loss

2026

Though evaporation from plant leaves drives transpiration, it also results in loss of water. Because water is critical for photosynthetic reactions and other cellular processes, evolutionary pressures on plants in different environments have driven the acquisition of adaptations that reduce water loss.In land plants, the uppermost cell layer of a plant leaf, called the epidermis, is coated with a waxy substance called the cuticle. This hydrophobic layer is composed of the polymer cutin and...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Controlling the reactivity and selectivity during the synthesis of a molecule is very important criteria for chemists. This has led to the development of many reagents that allow chemists to pick and choose reagents suitable for a given task. Quite often, a balance between reactivity and selectivity needs to be achieved. This experiment will use IR spectroscopy to monitor the reaction and to...

States of Water

2019

Water exists in any one of the three classical states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam or water vapor). The state of water depends on i) the intermolecular forces that draw molecules together and ii) the kinetic energy that leads to movements that pull them apart. Water freezes when the intermolecular forces are greater than the kinetic energy. Unlike most other substances, water is less dense in its solid state than in its liquid state. This is because each water molecule can form...

2025

This study presents the methodology for the generation of six different types of plasma discharges within a Hyperbolic Vortex Plasma Reactor for the degradation of micropollutants in water, including pharmaceuticals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The Morris Water Maze

2023

The Morris water maze is one of the most widely used behavioral tests for studying spatial learning and memory. In the initial phases of this task, rodents must swim to a platform to escape from a pool of water. The platform is then hidden under the water’s surface, so that the animal is required to remember it’s location in order to escape. This simple yet powerful maze design can be used to assay cognitive function, study animal models of neurodegenerative disease, and test potential drug...
