Sea Turtle Necropsy

Sea turtle necropsy is the systematic postmortem examination of a deceased sea turtle to assess its health, identify injuries or disease, and investigate possible causes of death. The process combines external inspection with dissection of internal organs, documentation of abnormalities, and collection of tissues for histopathology, microbiology, or toxicology testing. In environmental research, these findings can reveal threats such as infectious disease, pollution, fishing interactions, and habitat-related stress. Standardized necropsies help researchers monitor population health, identify emerging conservation risks, and guide management actions that protect sea turtles and their ecosystems.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
