Exsolution Lamellae

Exsolution lamellae are thin, regular layers of one mineral phase that form within another when a once-homogeneous solid solution becomes unstable, making them valuable records of mineral and rock history. During cooling or changing pressure and composition, atoms diffuse over short distances and separate into phases with different crystal structures or compositions, often producing coherent, oriented intergrowths. Common in feldspars, pyroxenes, and oxide minerals, these textures help researchers estimate cooling conditions, reconstruct geological environments, and interpret the evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Their geometry and composition can also influence mineral strength, reactivity, and the movement of elements through natural systems.

This workflow enables lamella production targeting fluorescently labeled biological structures that are small (<1 μm in axial extent) and rare (1 copy per cell) using a cryogenic tri-coincident imaging platform. This platform integrates fluorescence microscopy, focused ion beam milling, and scanning electron microscopy at a single focal position and enables simultaneous fluorescence microscopy while milling.

Cryo Electron Microscopes, either Scanning (SEM) or Transmission (TEM), are widely used for characterization of biological samples or other materials with a high water content1. A SEM/Focused Ion Beam (FIB) is used to identify features of interest in samples and extract a thin, electron-transparent lamella for transfer to a cryo-TEM.

Two experimental devices for examining liquid jet impingement on a high-speed moving surface are described: an air cannon device and a spinning disk device. The apparatuses are used to determine optimal approaches to the application of liquid friction modifier (LFM) onto rail tracks for top-of-rail friction control.
