Soil Health Indicator

A soil health indicator is a measurable physical, chemical, or biological property used to evaluate a soil’s capacity to support plant growth, regulate water, cycle nutrients, and sustain living organisms. Indicators such as soil organic carbon, pH, aggregate stability, water infiltration, and microbial respiration reflect processes including decomposition, nutrient transformation, and the formation of soil structure. Environmental researchers use these measurements to monitor degradation, compare management practices, guide conservation, and assess recovery during land restoration. Together, multiple indicators provide a more reliable picture of soil function than any single measurement and support evidence-based decisions for resilient ecosystems.

We demonstrate the utility of nest building behavior in laboratory mice as an indicator of welfare. Nest scoring is a sensitive technique that is altered by temperature, illness, and aggression. The time to integrate into nest test (TINT) is a simple cage-side assessment that can detect postoperative pain.

Quantification of the Respiratory Burst Response as an Indicator of Innate Immune Health in Zebrafish

The innate immune response protects organisms against pathogen infection. A critical component of the innate immune response, the phagocyte respiratory burst, generates reactive oxygen species that kill invading microorganisms. We describe a respiratory burst assay that quantifies reactive oxygen species produced when the innate immune response is chemically induced.

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...

2016

Repeated soil sampling has recently been shown to be an effective way to monitor forest soil change over years and decades. To support its use, a protocol is presented that synthesizes the latest information on soil resampling methods to aid in the design and implementation of successful soil monitoring programs.
