Cellulosic Biomass

Cellulosic biomass is plant-derived organic material rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, making it a major renewable resource for environmental applications. Because lignin shields carbohydrate polymers from degradation, pretreatment is used to disrupt the biomass structure, after which enzymes can hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose into fermentable sugars. Microorganisms may then convert these sugars into biofuels and other bioproducts, while residual lignin can provide process energy or serve as a source of chemicals. Using agricultural residues, forestry waste, and dedicated energy crops can reduce reliance on fossil resources, improve waste management, and support more sustainable energy and materials production.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

Plant biomass is a major carbon-neutral renewable resource that could be used for the production of biofuels. Plant biomass consists mainly of cell walls, a structurally complex composite material termed lignocellulosics. Here we describe a protocol for a comprehensive analysis of the content and composition of wall derived carbohydrates.
