Behavioral Assessment

Behavioral assessment is a systematic process for measuring and interpreting observable actions, emotional responses, and related environmental influences to inform clinical understanding and care. In medicine, it combines patient interviews, direct observation, standardized rating scales, and analysis of antecedents and consequences to identify behavioral patterns, functional relationships, and factors that may sustain symptoms or affect treatment adherence. Clinicians use these findings to support diagnosis, guide individualized interventions, monitor change, and evaluate outcomes over time. Behavioral assessment also strengthens research by providing structured, measurable evidence about patient functioning and responses to medical or psychological treatment.

The ability to assess executive functions such as behavioral flexibility in rats is useful for investigating the neurobiology of cognition in both intact animals and disease models. Here we describe automated tasks for assessing strategy shifting and reversal learning, which are particularly sensitive to disruptions in prefrontal cortical networks.
