Blood Activity Measurement

Blood activity measurement is a technique for quantifying the radioactivity of a tracer in blood, usually as activity concentration over time. After a radiopharmaceutical enters circulation, timed blood samples are collected and analyzed with a calibrated radiation detector to generate a blood activity curve that reflects tracer clearance and distribution. In medicine, these measurements provide an arterial input function for quantitative PET or SPECT studies, support pharmacokinetic modeling, and help estimate tissue uptake or radiation exposure. Accurate timing, sample handling, detector calibration, and correction for metabolites are essential for interpretable results.

2025

In this video, we describe a protocol for purifying platelets from murine whole blood and their subsequent activation with the platelet agonist thrombin. When analyzed with flow cytometry, the purified resting platelets are characterized based on the expression of their cell-surface marker CD41, whereas purified activated platelets co-express both the surface markers CD41 and CD62P.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Measurement of Larval Activity in the Drosophila Activity Monitor

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.

Endotoxin Activity Assay: A Chemiluminescence-Based Bioassay for Investigating Endotoxin Activity in Blood Sample
