Corneal Flap

A corneal flap is a thin, hinged layer of the cornea created to provide access to the underlying stromal tissue during refractive eye surgery, particularly LASIK. A microkeratome or femtosecond laser separates the flap along a precise plane while preserving its attachment, allowing surgeons to lift it, reshape the exposed cornea with an excimer laser, and then reposition the flap without sutures. This process changes corneal curvature to improve the eye’s focusing power and correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Understanding flap creation and healing is essential for surgical planning, patient safety, and evaluating outcomes in ophthalmic medicine.

To date, thick tissue defects are typically reconstructed by applying autologous tissue flaps or engineered tissues. In this protocol, we present a new method for engineering vascularized tissue flap bearing an autologous pedicle, to serve as a substitute to autologous flaps.

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.

Clark Y-14 Wing Performance: Deployment of High-lift Devices (Flaps and Slats)

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A wing is the major lift-generating apparatus in an airplane. Wing performance can be further enhanced by deploying high-lift devices, such as flaps (at the trailing edge) and slats (at the leading edge) during takeoff or landing. In this experiment, a wind tunnel is utilized to generate certain airspeeds, and a Clark Y-14 wing with a flap and slat...
