International Prostate Symptom Score

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is a standardized questionnaire that measures the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly those associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It asks patients to rate seven symptoms experienced during the previous month, including frequency, urgency, weak stream, and nocturia, on a 0-to-5 scale; a separate quality-of-life question assesses the impact of symptoms. The total symptom score ranges from 0 to 35 and helps classify symptom burden as mild, moderate, or severe. Clinicians use the IPSS to support evaluation, guide treatment decisions, and monitor changes in urinary symptoms over time.
