Liquid Crystal Tunable Filter

A liquid crystal tunable filter is an electronically controlled optical device that selects specific wavelengths of light, enabling rapid, nonmechanical spectral analysis. It uses voltage-dependent changes in liquid crystal birefringence, typically combined with polarizers and optical retarders, to alter the transmission condition and isolate selected wavelengths. In medicine, these filters support multispectral and hyperspectral imaging by allowing cameras to acquire information across multiple spectral bands without replacing physical filters. This capability can improve visualization of tissue structure, blood oxygenation, fluorescence signals, and other optical biomarkers, contributing to biomedical research, diagnostic imaging, and image-guided procedures.

2017

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

We demonstrate the preparation of siloxane-based and epoxy-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites. The LCEs are characterized with respect to reversible strain, liquid crystal ordering, and stiffness. As a potential application, we demonstrate their use as shape-responsive substrates in a custom device for active cell culture.

Synthesis and Exfoliation of Discotic Zirconium Phosphates to Obtain Colloidal Liquid Crystals

A two dimensional model material of discotic zirconium phosphate was developed. The inorganic crystal with lamellar structure was synthesized by hydrothermal, reflux, and microwave-assisted methods. On exfoliation with organic molecules, layered crystals can be converted to monolayers, and nematic liquid crystal phase was formed at sufficient concentration of monolayers.
