Margin Inking

Margin inking is a surgical pathology technique that uses colored dyes to mark the external surfaces of a resected tissue specimen, helping identify whether disease reaches the edge of excision. After the specimen is oriented, ink is applied to selected margins before fixation and processing; during microscopic examination, the preserved ink indicates the true surgical boundary and allows measurement of the distance between a lesion and that margin. In medicine, this method supports assessment of margin status in cancer specimens, guides decisions about additional treatment or re-excision, and improves communication between surgeons and pathologists. Consistent inking also strengthens the accuracy and reproducibility of pathology reports.
