Medial Meniscus Tear

A medial meniscus tear is an injury to the crescent-shaped cartilage on the inner side of the knee, which helps distribute load, absorb shock, and support joint stability. It commonly occurs when the knee twists or rotates while the foot remains planted, although age-related tissue weakening can also cause tearing; disrupted cartilage may produce pain, swelling, clicking, catching, or locking. Clinicians assess the injury through medical history and physical examination, often using magnetic resonance imaging to define its extent. Treatment ranges from activity modification and physical therapy to arthroscopic repair or partial meniscectomy, supporting recovery and reducing the risk of persistent dysfunction.

The present protocol describes the controlled microblade scratches on the surface of the articular cartilage after destabilizing the mouse knee by cutting the medial miniscotibial ligament. This animal model presents an accelerated form of osteoarthritis (OA) suitable for studying osteophyte formation, osteosclerosis, and early-stage pain.
