Psychoacoustic Assessment

Psychoacoustic assessment is the systematic measurement of how people perceive and interpret sound, providing functional information about auditory performance beyond basic hearing thresholds. It uses controlled acoustic stimuli and behavioral responses to evaluate perceptual attributes such as pitch, loudness, timbre, masking, and temporal resolution, often by determining detection or discrimination thresholds. In medicine, these assessments help characterize hearing loss, tinnitus, auditory processing difficulties, and the effects of cochlear implants or other interventions. By linking measurable sound perception to patient-reported experiences and clinical findings, psychoacoustic testing supports diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and evaluation of auditory outcomes.

We developed a protocol to assess well-being in mice during procedures using general anesthesia. A series of behavioral parameters indicating levels of well-being as well as glucocorticoid metabolites were analyzed. The protocol can serve as a general aid to estimate the degree of severity in a scientific, animal-centered manner.

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.
