Robotic Pneumonectomy

Robotic pneumonectomy is a robotic-assisted thoracic operation that removes an entire lung, usually to treat selected cancers or other severe, localized lung disease when lung-sparing surgery is not feasible. Through small chest incisions, the surgeon uses a robotic platform with three-dimensional visualization and articulated instruments to dissect the pulmonary hilum, control and divide the pulmonary vessels and main bronchus, and remove the lung. Careful patient selection and intraoperative management are essential because pneumonectomy substantially reduces respiratory reserve and carries risks such as bleeding, infection, and postoperative cardiopulmonary complications. The approach may provide precise dissection while limiting access trauma, but its safety and value depend on surgical expertise and tumor anatomy.

Internal lung surface area (ISA) is a critical criterion for assessing lung morphology and physiology in lung diseases and injury-induced alveolar regeneration. We describe here a standardized method that can minimize the measurement bias for ISA in both lung pneumonectomy and prosthesis implantation mouse models.
