Salidroside Mitochondrial Protection

Salidroside mitochondrial protection refers to the capacity of salidroside, a bioactive compound studied in medicine, to preserve mitochondrial structure and function under cellular stress. Its protective effects are commonly investigated through mechanisms such as limiting reactive oxygen species, maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential, supporting cellular energy production, and reducing mitochondria-linked apoptotic signaling. In experimental models, these actions can help clarify how oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to tissue injury and disease. Research on salidroside may therefore inform therapeutic strategies for conditions involving impaired energy metabolism while guiding studies of dosage, molecular targets, and clinical relevance.

Animal Mitochondrial Genetics

2020

Among all the organelles in an animal cell, only mitochondria have their own independent genomes. Animal mitochondrial DNA is a double-stranded, closed-circular molecule with around 20,000 base pairs. Mitochondrial DNA is unique in that one of its two strands, the heavy, or H, -strand is guanine rich, whereas the complementary strand is cytosine rich and called the light, or L, -strand. Compared to nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA has a very low percentage of non-coding regions and is marked by...

This protocol describes a procedure to study the respiration of mitochondria isolated from skeletal muscles. This method was adapted from Scorrano et al. (2007). The mitochondrial isolation procedure requires about 2 hours. The mitochondrial respiration can be completed in about 1 hour.

Comparing Mitochondrial, Chloroplast, and Prokaryotic Genomes

2020

The present-day mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes have retained some of the characteristics of their ancestral prokaryotes and also have acquired new attributes during their evolution within eukaryotic cells. Like prokaryotic genomes, mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes neither bind with histone-like proteins nor show complex packaging into chromosome-like structures, as observed in eukaryotes. Unlike mitotic cell divisions observed in eukaryotic cells, mitochondria and chloroplasts...
