Serial Assessment

Serial assessment is the repeated evaluation of a patient’s clinical status over time, allowing healthcare professionals to identify changes that a single examination may miss. It works by comparing findings from successive encounters, such as symptoms, physical examination results, vital signs, laboratory measurements, or imaging, against the patient’s baseline and expected course. In medicine, this approach helps distinguish improvement from deterioration, assess treatment response, detect complications, and guide adjustments to management. Serial assessment is especially valuable when disease progression is dynamic or early findings are subtle, supporting timely decisions and more individualized patient care.

Serial Position Effect

2025

The serial position effect is a cognitive phenomenon where individuals are more likely to recall the first and last items in a list compared to those in the middle. This effect is divided into the primacy effect and the recency effect. The primacy effect is observed when the initial items in a list are remembered better. This occurs because these items are rehearsed more frequently or receive more elaborative processing, allowing them to be encoded into long-term memory more effectively. For...

Source: Jonathan F. Blaize1, Elizabeth Suter1, and Christopher P. Corbo1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Quantitative assessment of prokaryotes can be onerous given their abundance, propensity for exponential proliferation, species diversity within a population, and specific physiological needs. Compounding this challenge, is the four-phase nature in which bacteria replicate (lag, log, stationary and death). The ability to accurately...

Here we present a protocol for administration of the video-referenced rating of reciprocal social behavior (vrRSB) using a paper or online version. This survey quantifies RSB, a prerequisite for social competence, in toddlers through "video-referenced" items whereby a subject is compared to a reference child shown in a three-minute video.

We describe methods for longitudinal monitoring of the efficacy of therapeutics for the treatment of colonic pathologies in mice using a rigid endoscope. This protocol can be readily used for the characterization of the therapeutic response of an individual tumor in live mice and also for monitoring potential disease relapse.
