Auditory Visual Stimuli

Auditory visual stimuli are combinations of sounds and visual signals presented together to study how the nervous system processes information across senses. The brain integrates these inputs by comparing their timing, location, and meaning, so signals that are closely aligned can enhance perception or alter the interpretation of either modality. In neuroscience, researchers use controlled audiovisual stimuli to investigate multisensory integration, attention, sensory processing, and perceptual decision-making. These paradigms also support research on audiovisual speech, where visual mouth movements can influence the sounds listeners perceive, and help clarify how the brain forms a coherent representation of the surrounding environment.

2012

The application of a classical fear conditioning behavioral paradigm for auditory prosthetic research in rats is described. This paradigm provides a mechanism for identifying both detection of, and discrimination between, distinct acoustic and electrical stimuli using heart-rate as an outcome measure.

Preparing Wedge Brain Slices to Visualize Auditory Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the process of preparing wedge-shaped brain slices in a laboratory setting. Using a vibratome, a wedge-shaped slice from a mouse's brain is crafted with varying thickness. This slice contains the auditory nerve root positioned on the thicker end, while the hearing-related neurons are located on the thinner end.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.
