Force Plate Measurement

Force plate measurement is a biomechanical technique that quantifies the forces and moments a person exerts on a surface, providing objective information about balance, posture, and movement. A force plate uses calibrated sensors to detect ground-reaction forces as an individual stands, shifts weight, or walks; these data can be used to calculate the center of pressure and its changes over time. In neuroscience, researchers apply force plate measurements to assess postural control, motor coordination, gait, and responses to sensory or neurological impairment. The method supports studies of motor behavior, rehabilitation outcomes, and disease-related changes in balance and movement.

Determination of Impingement Forces on a Flat Plate with the Control Volume Method

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate forces on bodies as the result of changes in the linear momentum of the flow around them using a control volume formulation [1, 2]. The control volume analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a differential...

2026

An accessible, low-cost apparatus for measuring human muscle force–velocity–power relationships was developed using inexpensive materials, a 3D-printed gear, a smartphone accelerometer, and Python freeware. Validation against a gold-standard ergometer demonstrated physiologically relevant measurements while providing equitable, hands-on learning opportunities in an undergraduate classroom setting.
