Frequency Band Selection

Frequency band selection is the process of identifying specific ranges of oscillatory frequencies within a neural signal for focused analysis. In neuroscience, researchers use spectral analysis or digital filtering to separate recordings such as EEG, MEG, and local field potentials into frequency bands, then measure features including power, amplitude, or connectivity within each range. Selecting appropriate bands helps relate neural oscillations to brain states, cognitive processes, sensory responses, and neurological conditions. Careful selection also improves signal interpretation by reducing irrelevant activity and aligning analyses with established or data-driven patterns in the underlying neural data.

Frequency-dependent Selection

2026

When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.Positive Frequency-Dependent SelectionIn positive...

When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands. The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap. 2016

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the brainstem and its neurons are maximally activated during waking and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep brain states. This work describes the experimental approach to record in vitro gamma band subthreshold membrane oscillation in PPN neurons.

Artificial Selection - Student Protocol

Observing Artificial Selection in Plants ExpandTo begin the experiment, collect five two-week old grown plants from the generation one population that appear healthy. Note: Plants should appear green, not wilted, and not have damaged leaves. Experimental Hypothesis: The experimental hypothesis for this lab might be that the number of lead trichomes varies naturally, but the average number will increase over generations if only plants with the highest number of trichomes are interbred or...
