Rat Motor Function

Rat motor function refers to the neural control and behavioral performance of movement in rats, making it a useful model for studying how the nervous system coordinates action. Motor commands arise from interactions among the motor cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord, which regulate movement initiation, posture, balance, strength, and coordination through descending neural pathways. Researchers assess these functions with tasks such as locomotion, gait analysis, grip strength, rotarod performance, and skilled reaching. These measurements help characterize motor-system development, evaluate injury and neurodegenerative disease, and determine whether treatments restore or alter movement.

2025

This video demonstrates the staircase test to assess motor function in a hemiparkinsonian rat with a right brain lesion. The lesion disrupts dopamine signaling, impairing left paw control, which results in more pellets remaining on the left stairs, indicating motor dysfunction.

(2015)This video demonstrates the targeted delivery of a fluorescent neuronal tracer into motor neurons via intramuscular injection at the motor end plates (MEPs). It outlines the steps involved in preparing the rat, injecting the tracer, and assessing labeled motor neurons for neurotherapeutic potential.

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.
