Real-time Current Injection

Real-time current injection is an electrophysiological technique that delivers controlled electrical current into a neuron while recording its membrane voltage, allowing researchers to test how cells integrate inputs and generate signals. During whole-cell patch-clamp recording, a current-clamp amplifier applies defined waveforms that shift membrane potential and, when threshold is reached, elicit action potentials; these responses reveal properties such as input resistance, firing threshold, and adaptation. In neuroscience, the method measures intrinsic excitability, compares neuronal responses under different conditions, and helps link ion-channel function and cellular dynamics to circuit behavior and disease-related changes.
