Root Mean Square

Root Mean Square (RMS) is a statistical measure of the effective magnitude of a varying signal, even when its values alternate above and below zero. It works by squaring each measurement, averaging those squared values over a defined time window, and taking the square root of that average, thereby preventing positive and negative values from canceling. In neuroscience, RMS quantifies amplitude in recordings such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), and neural time series, helping researchers compare brain or muscle activity across tasks, conditions, or participants and evaluate signal strength relative to noise.

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...

Perfect Square Trinomial: Square of a Difference

A perfect square trinomial involving subtraction can be understood through a geometric model. Consider a square sheet of glass with a side length of a. A technician wants to create a smaller square by trimming a strip of width b from two adjacent sides. Each strip removed from the original sheet is a rectangle with dimensions a and b, so each strip has area ab. Removing two such strips decreases the original area by twice this amount. However, the two strips overlap at one corner. This...

Perfect Square Trinomial: Square of a Sum

A perfect square trinomial can be understood by examining how the area of a square changes when its side length is increased. Consider an engineer designing a square solar panel array with a side length of a. The original array forms a square whose area equals the side length squared. As energy demand increases, the engineer expands the array by b units along two adjacent edges, creating a larger square with a side length of a + b.The enlarged array can be divided into four regions. The...

A Punnett square displays the possible genotypes offspring can inherit from two parental genotypes. If a trait’s inheritance pattern (e.g., dominant or recessive) is known, Punnett squares can also be used to determine the probability of inheriting a phenotype. Punnett squares are applicable in situations where trait inheritance is determined by a single gene locus and traits are independently inherited. However, they cannot predict trait probabilities for more complex genetic inheritance...
