Wavelet Analysis Application

Wavelet analysis is a mathematical signal-processing technique that represents complex data across multiple scales, making it valuable for studying signals whose frequency content changes over time. It works by correlating a signal with shifted and scaled wavelet functions, producing localized time-frequency information that can reveal both rapid transients and sustained oscillations. In neuroscience, researchers apply wavelet analysis to electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and other neural recordings to characterize brain rhythms, identify event-related changes, and distinguish signal features from noise. These measurements support investigations of neural communication, sensory processing, cognition, sleep, and neurological disorders.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...

This protocol describes partial wavelet transform coherence (pWTC) for calculating the time-lagged pattern of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) to infer the direction and temporal pattern of information flow during social interaction. The effectiveness of pWTC in removing the confounds of signal autocorrelation on INS was proved by two experiments.
