Zebrafish Larvae Brain

The zebrafish larval brain is the developing central nervous system of young Danio rerio, a compact and accessible model for studying how neural circuits form and function. Its largely transparent body, rapid development, conserved brain regions, and tractable genetics allow researchers to visualize neurons in living larvae using fluorescent labeling and time-lapse microscopy, while behavioral assays connect neural activity with sensory and motor responses. In neuroscience, zebrafish larvae support research on brain development, neuronal connectivity, sensory processing, behavior, and neurological disease, enabling cellular mechanisms to be examined in intact animals and providing a platform for testing genetic or pharmacological interventions.

We present a novel method for microgavage of larval zebrafish utilizing standard embryo microinjection and stereomicroscopy equipment. We demonstrate that microgavage is a safe and efficient technique useful for delivering controlled amounts of diverse materials specifically into the larval zebrafish intestinal lumen.

Inducing Neuroinflammation in Zebrafish Larvae with a Lipopolysaccharide Injection

2025

The video demonstrates the microinjection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) into the brains of zebrafish larvae to induce neuroinflammation. The larvae are positioned on an agarose-lined dish, the needle is inserted into the brain ventricles, and the LPS is injected. The injected LPS triggers an immune response that leads to neuroinflammation.

Modeling Drug-Induced Hemorrhage in Zebrafish Larva

In this video, fertilized zebrafish embryos are dechorionated under a stereo microscope and then exposed to a cholesterol synthesis inhibitor, leading to the development of blood vessel ruptures and brain hemorrhages in the larvae. Hemorrhagic larvae, identifiable by distinct red spots, are subsequently separated under a microscope for further analysis.

2013

Our laboratory developed a novel high-throughput automated imaging system that is useful for the detection of several different behaviors in 7-day-old zebrafish larvae. The system can be used for detecting subtle changes in behavior after the larvae have been exposed to environmental toxicants or pharmaceuticals.
