Coronary Blood Flow

Coronary blood flow is the circulation of blood through the vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste. It is regulated mainly by myocardial oxygen demand, local metabolites, endothelial signaling, and vascular smooth muscle tone, with much of the perfusion occurring during ventricular diastole because systolic contraction compresses intramyocardial vessels. In pharmacology, understanding these mechanisms helps explain how vasodilators, beta-adrenergic drugs, and other cardiovascular agents alter coronary resistance, oxygen delivery, and cardiac workload. Measuring changes in coronary flow supports the study of ischemia, angina, drug efficacy, and adverse cardiovascular effects.

Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is useful for assessment of myocardial oxygen demand and evaluation of cardiovascular risk. This study establishes a step-by-step transthoracic Doppler echocardiographic (TTDE) method for longitudinal monitoring of the changes in CFR, as measured from coronary artery in mice, under the experimental pressure overload of aortic banding.

Blood Flow

Blood is pumped by the heart into the aorta, the largest artery in the body, and then into increasingly smaller arteries, arterioles, and capillaries. The velocity of blood flow decreases with increased cross-sectional blood vessel area. As blood returns to the heart through venules and veins, its velocity increases. The movement of blood is encouraged by smooth muscle in the vessel walls, the movement of skeletal muscle surrounding the vessels, and one-way valves that prevent backflow. Slow...

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations of Blood Flow in a Cerebral Aneurysm

Source: Joseph C. Muskat, Vitaliy L. Rayz, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana The objective of this video is to describe recent advancements of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations based on patient- or animal-specific vasculature. Here, subject-based vessel segmentations were created, and, using a combination of open-source and commercial tools, a high-resolution numerical solution was determined within a flow model.
