Behavioral Attribution

Behavioral attribution is the psychological process of explaining why a person or group behaves in a particular way, a central topic in social psychology because these explanations shape judgment, emotion, and action. People typically weigh internal factors, such as personality or intention, against external factors, such as social context, situational pressures, or chance, often using patterns of consistency, distinctiveness, and consensus; limited information can produce attribution biases. Studying these processes helps explain impression formation, interpersonal conflict, stereotyping, and responsibility judgments, while informing research on communication, education, organizations, and interventions that reduce misinterpretation of others’ behavior.

In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958). An internal factor is an...

According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is called the fundamental attribution...

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Social psychologists and personality psychologists both attempt to predict human behavior, but they focus on very different factors. Whereas personality psychologists focus on how personality traits, character, and individual differences affect behavior, social psychologists focus primarily on the power of social situations in shaping behavior. We often underestimate the role that social situations can play in determining behavior. We...
