La plupart des revues suivent souvent les Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, ou directives PRISMA, utilisant des organigrammes pour montrer comment les études ont été choisies
Les chercheurs commencent par rechercher dans de nombreuses bases de données pour trouver autant d’études pertinentes que possible.
Après avoir compilé les résultats de plusieurs bases de données, les études en double sont supprimées, puis filtrées par groupe d’âge, conception et résultats.
Ensuite, les études sont évaluées pour leur qualité — ou le « risque de biais » — afin de vérifier la fiabilité de leurs méthodes.
