חשבו על ילדה שרוכבת על האופנוע שלה תחת השמש הקופחת, מרגישה צמאה.

היא מבחינה בתחנת דלק וקונה בקבוק מים. בקבוק המים הראשון הזה מעניק לה סיפוק או תועלת עצומה.

עדיין צמאה, היא מקבלת בקבוק מים נוסף.

עם זאת, התועלת של זה פחותה מהראשונה.

אם היא תשתה יותר בקבוקי מים, היא עלולה לחוות תועלת שלילית.

תועלת שולית מודדת את הסיפוק הנוסף של אדם מצריכת יחידה אחת נוספת של סחורה.

חוק התועלת השולית הפוחתת קובע שלאחר צריכת כמות מספקת של סחורה, התועלת הנגזרת מכל יחידה עוקבת פוחתת, וכל שאר הדברים שווים.

חלוקת המים הנצרכת במספר הבקבוקים היא דוגמה. במציאות, ניתן לחלק סחורות למאות או אלפי יחידות. לא משנה כמה זעירות התוספות, כל יחידת סחורה נוספת מספקת פחות שביעות רצון, וכתוצאה מכך עקומת ירידה מתמשכת בגרף.
