Multiple alleles can shape traits through blood type, sickle cell anemia, incomplete dominance, and codominance. Multiple allelism means a gene has three or more allelic forms. Diploid organisms, including humans, usually carry only two alleles for each gene, but many human genes exist in multiple forms in the population.

Human blood type is a clear example of multiple allelism. The blood type gene has three alleles: I A , I B , and i. These alleles help determine which blood type a person has and show how different versions of one gene can act together in a population.

Sickle cell anemia shows incomplete dominance. It is caused by a mutation in the gene for beta-globin, HBB. People with two sickle cell alleles can develop the disease. Their red blood cells become stiff and crescent-shaped, which can clog blood vessels. People with two normal beta-globin alleles make flexible, disc-shaped red blood cells that move easily through the body.

A heterozygote has one normal allele and one sickle cell allele. These individuals make both normal and sickle-shaped red blood cells. They usually have the sickle cell trait and rarely have disease problems, unless they are exposed to low oxygen levels. This pattern is called incomplete dominance because the heterozygote has an intermediate phenotype.

Sickle cell heterozygotes also show codominance at the molecular level. The normal and sickle cell alleles produce about the same amount of their protein products in red blood cells. Blood type also shows codominance. The I A and I B alleles make A and B antigen proteins, while the i allele makes no antigen protein. I A and I B are dominant over i, so two i alleles are needed for blood type O. However, I A and I B are codominant, so an I A I B person displays both A and B antigens on each red blood cell surface.
