אטומים ומולקולות מקיימים אינטראקציה באמצעות קשרים (או כוחות): תוך מולקולרי ובין מולקולרי. הכוחות הם אלקטרוסטטיים מכיוון שהם נובעים מאינטראקציות (מושכות או דוחות) בין מינים טעונים (מטענים קבועים, חלקיים או זמניים) ומתקיימים עם עוצמות משתנות בין יונים, מולקולות קוטביות, לא קוטביות ונייטרליות. הסוגים השונים של כוחות בין-מולקולריים הם יון–דיפול, דיפול–דיפול, קשרי מימן ופיזור; ביניהם, דיפו–דיפול, קשרי מימן וכוחות פיזור קיימים בין אטומים ומולקולות ניטרליים והם ידועים ביחד ככוחות ואן דר ואלס. 

כוחות דיפול-דיפול 

למולקולות קוטביות יש מטען חיובי חלקי בקצה האחד ומטען שלילי חלקי בקצה השני של המולקולה - הפרדה של מטען הנקרא דיפול. במולקולה קוטבית כמו HCl, אטום ה-Cl האלקטרושלילי יותר נושא מטען שלילי חלקי, ואילו אטום ה-H הפחות אלקטרושלילי נושא מטען חיובי חלקי. כוח משיכה בין מולקולות HCl נובע מהמשיכה בין הקצה החיובי של מולקולת HCl אחת לקצה השלילי של האחר. כוח משיכה זה נקרא משיכה דיפול-דיפול - הכוח האלקטרוסטטי בין קצה חיובי חלקי של מולקולה קוטבית אחת לקצה שלילי חלקי של אחרת.

כוחות פיזור 

אחד משלושת כוחות ואן דר ואלס קיים בכל השלבים המעובים, ללא קשר לאופי האטומים או המולקולות המרכיבות את החומר. כוח משיכה זה נקרא כוח הפיזור הלונדוני לכבודו של הפיזיקאי האמריקני יליד גרמניה פריץ לונדון, אשר בשנת 1928 הסביר זאת לראשונה. כוח זה מכונה לעתים קרובות פשוט ככוח הפיזור. מכיוון שהאלקטרונים של אטום או מולקולה נמצאים בתנועה קבועה (או, לחילופין, מיקומם נתון לשינויים קוונטיים-מכניים), בכל רגע בזמן, אטום או מולקולה יכולים לפתח דיפול זמני, מיידי, אם האלקטרונים שלו מפוזרים. בצורה אסימטרית. הנוכחות של דיפול זה יכולה, בחזרה, לעוות את האלקטרונים של אטום או מולקולה שכנים, וליצור דיפול מושרה. שני דיפולים זמניים אלה , המתנודדים במהירות, מביאים למשיכה אלקטרוסטטית חלשה יחסית בין המינים - מה שנקרא כוח פיזור.

כאשר מוסיפים תרכובת יונית כמו KCl לממס קוטבי כמו מים, היונים במוצק נפרדים ומתפזרים באופן אחיד. כוחות יון–דיפול מושכים את הקצה החיובי (מימן) של מולקולות המים הקוטביות אל יוני הכלוריד השליליים על פני המוצק, והם מושכים את הקצוות השליליות (החמצן) אל יוני האשלגן החיוביים. מולקולות המים מקיפות יוני K+ ו-Cl- בודדים, מפחיתות את הכוחות האינטריוניים החזקים הקושרים את היונים יחד (במוצק) ומאפשרות להם לעבור לתמיסה כיונים מומסים. התגברות על המשיכה האלקטרוסטטית מאפשרת תנועה עצמאית של כל יון מומס בתמיסה מדוללת כאשר היונים עוברים ממקומות קבועים בתרכובת הבלתי מומסת ליונים מפוזרים בתמיסה.

Forces between molecules help explain why matter behaves the way it does. These intermolecular attractions act between separate molecules, not within a single molecule. They are often much weaker than the bonds that hold atoms together inside a molecule, but they still affect many properties of liquids and solids.
