Aggregates Classification

Aggregate types are grouped by size, petrographic characteristics, weight, and source. These categories help describe how different aggregates are identified and used in concrete. Size is one of the most common ways to classify them.

Based on particle size, aggregates are either coarse or fine. Coarse aggregates are particles that do not pass through ASTM sieve No. 4. Fine aggregates are the particles that do pass through that sieve. Petrographic classification looks at shared mineral features. Common mineral groups in aggregates include silica minerals, feldspars, micaceous minerals, and carbonate minerals.

Aggregates are also classified by weight. Normal-weight aggregates are commonly used in standard concrete applications. Heavyweight aggregates are used to produce denser concrete. Lightweight aggregates are used when thermal insulation is needed.

The source of the aggregate is another important category. Natural aggregates come from rock quarries, gravel pits, and riverbeds. Artificial aggregates are made from industrial byproducts such as fly ash and expanded blast furnace slag. They can also be produced by crushing construction waste.
