Question 1

What are the four main types of macromolecules found in living organisms?

Accepted Answer

The four main macromolecules are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and serve as energy sources. Lipids are hydrophobic molecules used for long-term energy storage. Proteins are chains of amino acids that perform structural and functional roles. Nucleic acids store genetic information.

Question 2

How do monosaccharides differ from polysaccharides?

Accepted Answer

Monosaccharides are simple sugars with single carbohydrate units, such as glucose. Polysaccharides are complex chains formed when multiple monosaccharides join together through dehydration synthesis. Starch, a common polysaccharide, forms a coiled spring-like structure due to bond angles in the polymer chain and serves as an energy storage molecule in plants.

Question 3

What is the basic structure of an amino acid and how do proteins form?

Accepted Answer

Each amino acid has an amino group (N-terminal) at one end and a carboxyl group (C-terminal) at the other, with a unique side chain called an R-group. The 20 standard amino acids link together through peptide bonds to form protein chains. Different combinations and sequences of amino acids create proteins with distinct structures and functions.

Question 4

Why does Benedict's Reagent change color when exposed to monosaccharides?

Accepted Answer

Benedict's Reagent contains copper II ions that act as an oxidizing agent. Monosaccharides with hemiacetal groups, like glucose, are reducing sugars that transfer electrons to copper II ions, reducing them to copper I ions. This reduction causes the solution to change from blue to green or reddish-orange depending on monosaccharide concentration.

Question 5

How does the iodine indicator detect starch in a solution?

Accepted Answer

Iodine contains polyiodide anions that form charge transfer complexes with starch. When starch is present, it acts as a charge donator and combines with polyiodide anions to form a new complex that absorbs light at a different wavelength. This causes the solution to turn dark blue, indicating the presence of starch.

Question 6

What do Biuret's Reagent and Sudan IV test detect in macromolecule identification?

Accepted Answer

Biuret's Reagent detects proteins by binding copper ions to nitrogen in peptide bonds, producing a violet color proportional to peptide bond concentration. Sudan IV detects lipids by dissolving in them and staining them red, since Sudan IV is lipophilic but not water-soluble. Both tests are used in macromolecules identification using indicator solutions procedure to identify specific macromolecules.

Question 7

What are triglycerides and how do they differ from other lipids?

Accepted Answer

Triglycerides are the most common lipids, composed of a glycerol molecule connected to three fatty acid chains that can be saturated or unsaturated. They serve as long-term energy storage in animals and plants. Unlike triglycerides, phospholipids have a polar head and hydrophobic tails, making them essential for cell membrane structure.
