3d Arterial Models

3D arterial models are engineered or computational representations of blood vessels that reproduce arterial geometry, structure, and function for studying vascular biology and disease. In engineered systems, endothelial and smooth muscle cells are organized within biomaterial scaffolds or hydrogels and exposed to controlled fluid flow, providing mechanical cues that influence cell behavior and tissue maturation. Computational models instead reconstruct vessel anatomy and simulate hemodynamics under defined conditions. These platforms support investigation of atherosclerosis, aneurysms, thrombosis, and vascular injury while enabling testing of stents, grafts, and drug responses. By linking biomechanics with cellular processes, they can improve disease modeling and guide more predictive bioengineering designs.

A cell culture model of resistance arteries is described, allowing for the dissection of signaling pathways in endothelium, smooth muscle, or between endothelium and smooth muscle (the myoendothelial junction). The selective application of agonists or protein isolation, electron microscopy, or immunofluorescence can be utilized using this cell culture model.
