Biochemical Tunability

Biochemical tunability is the capacity to adjust a molecule’s biochemical properties, interactions, or activity in a controlled and predictable manner. In bioengineering, tunability can arise through changes in molecular composition, sequence, concentration, or environmental conditions that alter binding, catalysis, signaling, or assembly. Researchers use this control to optimize biomaterials, enzymes, biosensors, and engineered cells for specific functions. By linking design parameters to measurable biological outcomes, biochemical tunability supports systematic optimization rather than trial-and-error development, enabling responsive systems with adjustable performance for diagnostics, therapeutics, biomanufacturing, and tissue engineering.
