Corneoscleral Shell

The corneoscleral shell is the continuous, collagen-rich outer coat of the eye formed by the transparent cornea and opaque sclera, providing optical shape, protection, and mechanical support. Its behavior arises from the layered, directionally organized collagen matrix, tissue hydration, and material differences between cornea and sclera, which together distribute intraocular-pressure loads while allowing the cornea to maintain a precise refractive surface. In bioengineering, characterizing this shell’s geometry, stiffness, anisotropy, and deformation supports finite-element models, disease and injury studies, contact-lens and surgical design, and development of biomimetic ocular implants. Such work helps link tissue mechanics to vision and eye health.

Corneoscleral Button Isolation: A Surgical Procedure to Obtain Corneoscleral Button from Porcine Eye

2025

In this video, we show a procedure to surgically isolate the corneoscleral button to generate an ex vivo porcine cornea model. The model is helpful for histological, pathological, and pharmacological studies due to its similarity to the human eye.

Porcine Ex vivo Cornea Model of Bacterial Keratitis: A Technique to Establish Bacterial Infection in Corneal Epithelial Cells

2025

This video describes a protocol to set up an ex vivo model for bacterial keratitis using a corneoscleral button dissected from the porcine eye. Inoculated bacteria traverse the corneal epithelial incisions to invade the underlying stroma and establish an infection within the corneal tissues that mimic the in vivo infection.

Characterization of the Sense of Agency over the Actions of Neural-machine Interface-operated Prostheses

Here we present a protocol which characterizes the sense of agency developed over the control of sensate virtual or robotic prosthetic hands. Psychophysical questionnaires are employed to capture the explicit experience of agency, and time interval estimates (intentional binding) are employed to implicitly measure the sense of agency.

Anterior Eye Segment Dissection: A Method to Isolate Cornea Bearing Anterior Segment from Porcine Eye

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the dissection of the cornea-bearing anterior segment of the porcine eye. The isolated segment can be used for organ culturing to study the pathophysiology of eye disorders.

Laser-assisted Selective Ablation of Porcine Corneal Endothelial Cells: A Technique to Induce Focused Porcine Corneal Endothelial Injury for Ex Vivo Studies

2025

This video demonstrates a non-invasive laser-assisted procedure to selectively damage the corneal endothelial cells in the porcine eye. The developed ex vivo model of endothelial cell damage can be used to study diseases of the corneal endothelium.
