Crosslinking Solution

A crosslinking solution is a liquid formulation that links polymer chains or biomolecules to create a connected network, changing the material’s mechanical, chemical, and biological properties. In bioengineering, reactive crosslinkers form covalent bonds between functional groups, while other formulations promote ionic or physical interactions under controlled conditions such as pH, temperature, concentration, or light exposure. The resulting networks can increase strength, stability, elasticity, and resistance to degradation in hydrogels, tissue scaffolds, drug-delivery systems, and biomaterial coatings. Selecting the crosslinking chemistry and reaction conditions helps researchers tune porosity, swelling, stiffness, and compatibility for specific biomedical applications.

Crosslinking Neuronal Surface Proteins in the Mouse Brain using a Chemical Crosslinking Assay

2025

This video demonstrates the crosslinking of neuronal surface proteins using Bis-sulfosuccinimidyl suberate or BS3. Isolated and chilled mouse brain is sectioned coronally. The desired region is extracted from the sections, minced, and treated with BS3. BS3 crosslinks surface proteins like GABA receptors, leaving internal proteins unaltered. The reaction is quenched with glycine before processing the samples for further analysis.

This article describes a process for tuning the size and crosslinking density of covalently crosslinked nanoparticles from linear polyesters containing pendant functionality. By tailoring synthesis parameters (polymer molecular weight, pendant functionality incorporation, and crosslinker equivalents), a desired nanoparticle size and crosslinking density can be achieved for drug delivery applications.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

2023

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology A solution is a homogeneous mixture containing some components in small amounts, called solutes, and one component in a large amount, called the solvent. Solid-liquid solutions contain one or more solid solutes dissolved in a liquid solvent. Solutions are ubiquitous in chemistry: they are used to store and handle small amounts of material, carry out chemical reactions, and develop materials with controllable properties.
