Surgically Assisted Expansion

Surgically assisted expansion is a craniofacial procedure that combines surgical release of skeletal resistance with mechanical widening of a bone or anatomical structure, most commonly the mature maxilla. After targeted osteotomies weaken selected areas, an expansion device applies controlled transverse forces, gradually separating the bone segments and allowing new bone to form within the developing gap. In bioengineering and oral surgery, this approach addresses transverse maxillary deficiency when conventional orthodontic expansion cannot produce sufficient skeletal change. Its outcomes depend on surgical design, device mechanics, activation rate, tissue response, and subsequent stabilization, making it relevant to biomaterials, biomechanical modeling, and regenerative bone healing research.

2023

A set of novel finite element models of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) that could perform a clinically required amount of expander activation with various angles of buccal osteotomy was created for further analysis of the expansion patterns of the hemimaxillae in all three dimensions.

Surgical Robot-Assisted Transanal Specimen Extraction Radical Sigmoidectomy Without an Auxiliary Abdominal Incision

Robot-assisted natural orifice specimen extraction surgery is a minimally invasive technique that combines robotic precision with natural orifice specimen extraction. A 67-year-old patient successfully underwent the procedure in 290 min, with minimal bleeding and no residual cancer. This approach minimized abdominal trauma, reduced complications, and enabled a quick recovery.

Source: J. Jacob Chavez, Ryan T. Davis, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...
